Two women convicted of grand theft from Sony Pictures
( 2003-12-03 15:26) (Agencies)

A former Sony Pictures vice president and a film music provider were convicted of grand theft for stealing@than $400,000 from the entertainment company.

Georgette Sue Studnicka, 62, was the vice president of music publishing for Sony Pictures Entertainment. She was convicted Tuesday along with film music company owner Linda Sue Brooks, 56. Both are scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 3.

Studnicka was convicted of four counts of state income evasion from 1997 through 1999 as well as one count of grand theft. Brooks was convicted of one count of grand theft.

Studnicka faces a possible maximum seven-year prison term, while Brooks faces a possible five-year maximum.

Judge Larry P. Fidler also found true the allegation that the women stole more than $150,000, which adds a possible two years onto any sentence. Fidler found both women innocent of money laundering charges.

Studnicka remains free on $250,000 bail and Brooks on her own recognizance pending sentence.

Studnicka's job included overseeing the outside sale and lease of music used in Sony movies.

Brooks' company, Music Data Services, was allegedly hired to provide orchestrated music for films.

Deputy District Attorney Richard Lowenstein of the major fraud division said Studnicka began authorizing payments to Brooks in 1991. At first, he said, payments were relatively small, less than $2,000.

The amounts continued to grow and Lowenstein said the defendants eventually stole $416,000 from Sony. Brooks allegedly split the money with Studnicka.

Sony never received anything for the money paid to Brooks, Lowenstein said. Studnicka was fired after the scam was discovered in August 1999.
