Proverbs 諺語

Can you help me? Here are some English proverbs but unfortunately I'm not sure what they mean. Please can you explain them? They are: 1. Every cloud has a silver lining 2. A stitch in time saves nine 3. Don't count your chickens before they hatch 4. A penny saved is a penny earned

Robin, from China

This week's question is about proverbs. A proverb is a well known short saying. It's a bit like an idiom but it usually contains some traditional wisdom or truth and is based on common sense.

In this programme we explain some proverbs that are used quite often in conversation. For example, a penny saved is a penny earned, means if you save rather than spend your money you will feel like you have earned more money.

Proverbs 諺語

According to the proverb, saving money is like earning money!

Listen to the programme and find out if you should count your chickens before or after they hatch and how a stitch now will save nine in the future.

If you have a question for our team, send it to us at questions.chinaelt@bbc.co.uk and we might answer it on this programme.
