A pair of deadly attacks in Baghdad early Wednesday killed at least 97 people and wounded 162 others, CNN cited Iraqi police as saying.

A car bomb exploded in a Shiite district of Baghdad, killing at least 75 people and wounding 162 in one of the most deadly single attacks to date in Iraq, according to AFP report.

But the Reuters put the death toll at 80.

The car was driven by a suicide bomber who drove at speed into a group of construction workers waiting on Uruba square, in the Kazimiyah district, to be hired for daily work.

In the northern Baghdad neighborhood of Taji, men wearing Iraqi army uniforms pulled 17 men from their homes and shot them execution-style, according to CNN.

The men were killed around 4 a.m. Taji is a mixed Sunni-Shiite area of the Iraqi capital.
