SHANGHAI: The 22nd Congress on the Law of the World concluded in Shanghai on Friday, with specific resolutions involving rule of law, family issues, anti-terrorist acts, environmental protection and free trade approved.

These resolutions were based on the discussions of more than 1,500 eminent jurists from more than 60 countries and international organizations throughout the week.

The resolutions will be brought to the World Bank, World Trade Organization, the United Nations and other international organizations and then, hopefully, adopted by other countries in order to promote peace and rule of law, according to Bruce Lubarsky, a member of the Election Committee of the World Jurist Association (WJA), the sponsor of the congress.

Lubarsky said the resolutions are on issues that should concern the whole world.

He revealed that one of the resolutions on family issues deals with same-sex marriage, but did not elaborate.

The week-long congress, held in Beijing and then Shanghai, deliberated on 22 critical topics of international concern, ranging from international terrorism, United Nations reform and international trade to the judiciary, the media and human rights.

The congress plays an important role in the rule of law.

The Shanghai Declaration, announced at the closing ceremony, praised the congress as the hallmark of human civilization and progress and the most appropriate means for peaceful and rational resolution to social conflicts.

The declaration said that common efforts of the peoples of the world are required to build, through the rule of law, a harmonious international society, a common aspiration of people across the world.

It also urged all countries to respect and protect human rights, and accelerate the national processes toward signing and ratifying existing international human rights treaties.

The congress also recognizes China's remarkable achievements in recent years.
