(Xinhua)
Updated: 2005-01-16 16:40

Nine people were killed when a ferry was capsized after colliding with a cargo boat in South China's Guangdong Province on Saturday, said sources with the local police on Sunday.

The accident occurred when a ferry carrying 14 passengers and two sailors collided with a cargo boat fully loaded with sand and stones and running at a high speed in the watercourse in Humen Township of Dongguan city.

Rescue efforts were made immediately by the local police and seven people were saved while nine others were killed.

An early report said that two bodies were found while seven were missing. So far, bodies of all the nine victims were found and the sunken ferry was refloated.

Identification of the passengers on the ferry and handling of problems arising in the aftermath are underway.
