Buyers go bananas over luxury vehicles

To foreign automakers' surprise, Chinese buyers demonstrated a burning desire for luxury cars during the Beijing International Motor Show.

Many luxury and ultra expensive cars displayed during the seven-day auto gala were bought on the spot or ordered by Chinese customers, mainly private entrepreneurs, real estate businessmen, chief executive officers and entertainment stars.

More than half of Mercedes-Benz's 21 models on show have been sold, including two Maybaches retailing for more than 6 million yuan (US$724,600) a unit, said Anthea Wang, public relations manager for the company in Beijing.

"We are extremely excited about that as it explains how well-received our cars and brands are in China," Wang said.

BMW said that it received more than 20 orders for its sedans, including 7 series limousines and X5 sport utility vehicles, during the motor show.

Bentley, the British ultra luxury brand owned by Germany's Volkswagen, also sold three out of its four exhibited vehicles.
