Expert forecasts car prices to drop 10% yearly
(Xinhua)
Updated: 2004-04-12 11:40

The prices of China's home-made sedans, either economy or luxury type, are expected to plunge 10 percent annually during the coming several years, and reach the par on the international market in 2006, China Youth Daily reported Monday.

This was a forecast by Pan Zushun, general manager of China Imported Automobiles Trade Center, at an international automobiles exhibition held in Tianjin.

The prices of quite a number of Chinese home-made cars, such as Passat and Bora, have dropped to the same level as the post-tax prices of the imported ones, according to statistics of the trade center.

While the prices of some home-made cars, such as Mazda 6 and new Accord, which remain 10-15 percent higher than the post-tax prices of the imported ones, still have the margin to fall, Pan said.

In addition, as the joint ventures have directly introduced new types of cars from foreign countries, the investment in fixed assets and technology research will be dramatically reduced, which makes the cost of home-made cars much lower than that of the imported ones and render possibility for further price cut, the paper said.
