The Guangdong Provincial Bureau of Public Security is seeking to establish a better reputation with the launch of a new website to make its work more transparent.

Apart from some major criminal cases still under investigation or involving national secrets, the website shows all the information the police are working on within the province, according to Zheng Shaodong, deputy director of the bureau.

Addressing a news conference in Guangzhou, capital of South China's Guangdong Province, Thursday, Zheng said the police will be under the supervision of the public and the news media through the website.

And people will be told everything they have the right to know through the Internet.

The website which officially began operating Thursday will also help further improve relations between police and local residents, Zheng said.

Residents will be able to complain about police work that used to seem mysterious, and report police who are bending the law or regulations while they are on duty to higher authorities, via the website, Zheng added.

In addition, the online service will allow residents to apply for passports, travel documents, identity cards, frontier certificates and temporary resident certificates.

Companies can also apply for police to check their fire prevention equipment and citizens can also apply for vehicle license plates which can be used in both Guangdong Province and bordering Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions.

All application results are released and updated on the website.

Officials are hoping the innovations will improve the bureau's efficiency and management and help ensure honest police work for the good social order and economic development, Zheng said.
