China and Russia held the eighth round of military consultations in Beijing Tuesday, with broad consensus reached, and both sides jointly vowed to further boost co-operation in the future.

The half-day consultation was hosted by Xiong Guangkai, deputy chief of the general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, and Yury Baluyevsky, first deputy chief of general staff of the Russian armed forces.

The two sides exchanged views on the regional and international security situation, major international issues, co-operation between the two armed forces and other issues of common concern.

The two sides reached broad consensus. They agreed that developing friendly co-operative ties between the two armed forces is an important component of a strategic partnership.

Xiong said consensus was reached on almost all issues discussed during each round of consultations, which indicated that both countries share concerns and stands on many international and regional issues and have the same wish to further boost bilateral ties.

Xiong also expressed his appreciation to the Russian Government for its adherence to the one-China policy on the Taiwan question and that country's objection to any words and actions by the Taiwan authority aiming to change Taiwan's position and separate Taiwan from China.

Baluyevsky expressed the hope to further strengthen bilateral consultations with China on major international and regional issues. Also Tuesday, Chinese Defence Minister Cao Gangchuan met with Baluyevsky and vowed to further Sino-Russian military ties in the new year.

Cao, also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and a State Councilor said that with the support of the two heads of state, the China- Russia strategic co-operative partnership has developed soundly.

Baluyevsky said re-elected Russian President Vladimir Putin will pay more attention to boosting the strategic co-operative partnership between Russia and China, while bilateral military ties will also been strengthened.
