Commitment to further nuclear talks hailed
( 2003-11-01 09:48) (China Daily)

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (DPRK) commitment in principle to continuing six-way talks on its nuclear programme has delivered an important and positive message to the rest of the world, according to a senior Chinese official.

The visit by China's top legislator Wu Bangguo to the DPRK was a success and will have a far-reaching impact on bilateral ties, said Vice-Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who accompanied Wu during his three-day trip.

Having wrapped up his first visit to the DPRK, Wu, who chairs the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, returned to Beijing on Friday.

Wu's tour is the first high-level visit by a Chinese leader since China's new leadership was formed, Wang said on Friday.

The Chinese delegation included major officials in charge of Party and military affairs, indicating the importance China attaches to its links with the DPRK, he said.

When meeting DPRK leaders, Wu elaborated on China's stance for the settlement of the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, stressing that a peaceful solution through dialogue will benefit all.

China supports the reasonable claims being raised by the DPRK that the concerns of both it and the United States should be resolved simultaneously, said Wu.

Meanwhile, Wu urged all parties involved in the talks to minimize discrepancies and enlarge consensus, as well as to make necessary preparations to hold the next round of six-party talks as soon as possible.

The talks in Beijing in August brought together the DPRK, the Republic of Korea, Japan, Russia, the United States and the host nation.
