The body of Madame Chiang Kai-shek, Taiwan's most famous first lady, will be temporarily stored in a mausoleum in New York until she can be buried with her husband, a family spokeswoman said.

Madame Chiang's burial plans have been much discussed here since the 105-year-old woman died last Thursday in her New York home after catching a cold.

She was born in China, but fled the country with her husband. But when her husband died in 1975, she moved to New York.

Family spokeswoman Chiang Fang Chih-yi on Tuesday told reporters in New York that senior family members have decided that Madame Chiang's body would be temporarily kept in a mausoleum in New York.

``In the future, at an appropriate time, Madame Chiang's body will be buried together with her husband's,'' Chiang Fang said at a news conference broadcast Wednesday by Taiwan's ETTV cable news.

Chiang Fang did not provide details about where Madame Chiang's final resting place would be. The late president insisted on being buried in China, and his body is still stored in a mausoleum in Taiwan.

ETTV reported that Madame Chiang's body would be moved to the Ferncliff Cemetery in Westchester County, just north of New York City, on Wednesday or Thursday.
