Bay bridge set to boost delta area
( 2003-10-27 09:38) (China Daily)

With the construction of Hangzhou Bay Bridge, Hangzhou Bay New Zone is soon expected to become one of the most prosperous economies in the Yangtze River Delta, according to local authorities.

The bridge - the longest cross-sea bridge in the world - will traverse part of the East China Sea in the Yangtze River Delta. It will be 36 kilometres long and cost US$1 billion.

Work on the bridge began in June and will be finished by 2008.

The local government of Cixi, a coastal city in East China's Zhejiang Province, said Hangzhou Bay New Zone in Cixi will become a communications hub for three key cities in the Yangtze River Delta area. They are Shanghai, Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province, and Ningbo.

Meanwhile, the area's network of expressways, airports, ports and railway lines will give it the upper hand over its competitors, the local government claimed.

It said the well-developed transport system will help businesses reduce operation costs and improve efficiency, attracting domestic and overseas investors.

The new zone's upgraded industrial structure and sound investment environment are also drawcards, the local government said.

According to statistics from the administrative committee of Hangzhou Bay New Zone, there are more than 50,000 industrial and commercial businesses in the new zone. They cover over 30 industries and manufacture about 3,000 products, supplying materials, goods and services to investors from home and abroad.
