One in five trademarks comes from abroad - official
( 2003-10-23 23:58) (Xinhua)

Every fifth trademark registered in China comes from overseas, said an official at an international symposium held in Shanghai Thursday.

An Qinghu, director of the trademark bureau under the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, said at the "2003 Shanghai Trademark and City Economy International Symposium" that 192 countries and regions had registered 353,587 trademarks in China by the end of September.

Figures from the bureau show that since 1993, there were at least 20,000 applications for registrating foreign trademarks in China each year. In 2002, the first year of China's entry to the World Trade Organization, the number soared by 25.2 percent over the previous year. In 1979, only 20 countries registered 5,130 trademarks in China.

An attributed the progress to the deepening opening-up and improved investment environment of the country, which lured more multinational enterprises.

Shanghai, for example, hosted nearly 300 of top 500 companies in the world, 79 of which had set up regional headquarters. Foreign companies with China-registered trademarks had created about half of the city's gross industrial value, export volume and gross industrial profit.
