Drugs gang sentenced for 146 years in Britain

A 12-member drugs gang was
Tuesday sentenced for a total of 146 years in jail by a court in Liverpool, a
port city in western England.
The gang was sent to prison after what customs officers described as the
biggest single seizure of drugs, with an estimated street value of 20 million
pounds, in May 2002, according to a BBC report.
The drugs, including 119 kgs of heroin, 99 kgs of amphetamine, 14 kgs of
cannabis and one kilogram of cocaine, were discovered among vats carrying
hazardous chemicals into Britain through the port of Dover.
However, the seizure is just a tip of the iceberg but this should serve as a
severe warning, said Detective Superintendent David Brown, head of the Serious
and Organized Crime Unit.
"I feel that 146 years reflects the severity of the offenders' actions and
their intentions to distribute class A drugs throughout the country," he was
quoted as saying at the court.
"We know that the drugs were destined for other organized criminal groups
within the North West," he added.
