Show by chairman's daughter-in-law explores dance world
( 2003-09-06 11:25) (China Daily)

A solo photo exhibition on dancing is being held at the Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution in Beijing. On display are 175 photos about dancing by Shao Hua, a daughter-in-law of late Chairman Mao Zedong.

The exhibition ends on September 9.

Peacock Takes a Drink, a montage made from two photos by Shao Hua.
The photos on display have been selected from the more than 20,000 photos that Shao has taken over the past few years, said Shi Dali, head of the Chinese Dancers Association, one of the exhibition's organizers.

Shao, a 65-year-old major general, and research fellow of the People's Liberation Army Academy of Military Sciences, is the wife of Mao's second son, Mao Anqing.

"I love both the art of dancing and photography. I want to turn the momentary beauty into eternity through the medium of photography,'' Shao said.

She has developed a keen interest in photography since the early 1950s, taking photos of the late chairman Mao Zedong with a camera brought back from the former Soviet Union by Mao Anying, Mao's eldest son.

Shao cherished the invaluable opportunities to meet Mao and wanted to record the meetings.

Photography has now become part of her life wherever she goes.

In recent years, she has taken pictures of different themes and genres, such as folk customs, birds and flowers, and landscapes.

She has also focused on taking pictures of a great variety of dance performances by Chinese or foreign dancers.

The exhibition's other organizers include the Chinese Professional Photographers Association, the Chinese Women Photographers Association, and the Information Office of People's Liberation Army Academy of Military Sciences, and the United States photographic company Konica's Beijing branch.
