A blueprint for ties with Romania
( 2003-08-22 10:33) (China Daily)

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Thursday during a meeting with visiting Romanian President Ion Iliescu that the joint statement signed by the two leaders will be a guideline for the future development of Sino-Romanian relations.

Wen said the Chinese Government is ready to co-operate with Romania to fulfill the consensus reached by the joint document.

Referring to the development of the bilateral trade between the two countries, Wen said that since the Romanian prime minister's visit to China last April China had increased imports from Romania. As a result, bilateral trade volume has surged.

"Under the joint efforts of the two countries, the annual trade volume this year will be a historical record," Wen said.

There is still great potential for Sino-Romanian economic and trade co-operation, he added.

Iliescu said Romania has been studying the experience of China's development, which has benefited many other countries, and hopes to expand co-operation with China and push bilateral relations to a new high.

Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), also met Iliescu Thursday.

Wu said China's NPC and the Romanian Parliament have had fruitful exchanges at various levels, and expressed hope the momentum will be maintained. Iliescu said he had visited China six times since 1958, and expressed admiration for China's steady achievements.

He said Romania valued its relations with China, and besides Beijing, he would also visit Chongqing and Hong Kong to get a better understanding of China's west development and one country, two systems.

Chinese and Romanian senior officials also vowed to create better conditions to promote co-operation and exchange in the information industry.
