Yellow River faces drought and flood
( 2003-07-13 16:37) (Xinhua)

The Yellow River might be exposed to the dual tests of dry runs and floods due to the year's intricate weather conditions, sources with the Yellow River Water Resources Committee said Sunday in central China's Henan Province.

Statistics from the committee said that between January and June, only 8.1 billion cubic meters of water flew into the river's mainstreams, about 47 percent of the average figure in the past years and the least historical record.

Given the large amount of water consumption in Ningxia and Inner Mongolia areas, a water crisis which could be the worst in history might in the wake of the flooding season, the committee said.

In the lower reaches of the river, possibilities of a severe flood also rise, said Zhang Jinliang, deputy director of the Office of the Yellow River Flood Control Headquarters, adding no serious floods had occurred in the lower reaches of the river for the past two decades.

As the water supply to the lower reaches of the river mainly come from Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces as well as the area between Xiaolangdi Water Conservancy Project site and Huayuankou in Henan Province, if torrential rains happen this year, floods may quickly take shape, Zhang said.

To deal with the possible danger, the headquarters has made four massive flood control exercises in Shanxi, Shaanxi, Henan and Shandong provinces separately this June to boost local people's combat readiness against floods.

Meanwhile, over 3,000 hectares of forest lands involving 13,000 trees illegally planted on the river courses as well as some illegitimate entertainment and tourist facilities have been demolished in June.

To predict flood or dry run situation much more precisely, the headquarters has made heavy investment utilizing new technologies including remote sense, long-distance transmission of audi-visual data and computer assisted design for emergency rescuing schemes.
