At the World Internet Conference (WIC) in Quanzhou, China a session on artificial intelligence (AI) development and governance took place on July 23. Wang Jingtao, deputy director of the Cyberspace Administration of China, shared China's approach to advancing and regulating AI, while Ren Xianliang, the WIC's secretary-general delivered welcome remarks. The event showcased China's dedication to advancing AI responsibly. It emphasized four core principles guiding China's approach: establishing a unique governance system through policy support, driving innovation by leveraging AI as a catalyst for new quality productive forces, ensuring comprehensive security measures for businesses, and fostering openness and collaboration to create a unified cyber community for the future.

Next, efforts will focus on summarizing experience and improving mechanisms, with greater emphasis on balancing development and governance to further promote the healthy and orderly advancement of AI in a beneficial, safe, and equitable direction.

Officials from the network management technology bureau, the cybersecurity coordination bureau, and the international cooperation bureau of the Cyberspace Administration of China participated in the event. During the interactive session, participants exchanged views on issues such as AI infrastructure development, regulatory policy interpretation, and industry development trends.

This exchange broadened their comprehension of pertinent policies and tackled significant industry issues. They voiced optimism for the continuation of thematic discussions by the WIC to promote dialogue, collaboration, and enterprise development.

The event hosted by the WIC drew representatives from more than 50 companies, including Qualcomm, IBM, Nokia Bell Labs, Huawei, Ping An Group, Baidu, Tencent, JD.com, CTM, Keeson Technology, and vivo.
