BEIJING -- China registered a record 5.62 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) in the first half of 2025, marking a year-on-year increase of 27.86 percent, according to data released by the Ministry of Public Security on Monday.

The figure represents the highest half-year NEV registration total in the country's history. It accounts for 44.97 percent of all new automobile registrations during the same period, underscoring the acceleration of China's clean energy transition in the transportation sector.

By the end of June 2025, the total number of NEVs on China's roads had reached 36.89 million, representing 10.27 percent of the nation's overall automobile fleet.

Battery electric vehicles remained the dominant force in the NEV market, totaling nearly 25.54 million and accounting for 69.23 percent of all new energy vehicles.

China's NEV sector has witnessed explosive growth over the past decade. In 2014, just 120,000 NEVs were on the road. By the end of June 2022, that number had surpassed 10 million. It doubled by the close of 2023 and surged past 30 million by the end of 2024.

This rapid expansion reflects the country's broader push toward a greener transportation system, driven by advances in NEV technology, expanding charging infrastructure, and growing consumer demand for cleaner mobility solutions.

According to the National Energy Administration, the number of charging facilities across the country increased by 47.6 percent year-on-year as of March 2025, reaching nearly 13.75 million.

This total includes about 3.9 million public charging stations and 9.85 million private charging installations, providing critical support for the country's rapidly growing NEV fleet.
