Rising lifter Qiu confident in 2008 gold

TAI'AN, East China - Chinese lifter Qiu Hongmei, who on Monday broke the women's 58kg world record in clean and jerk, held by her compatriot Chen Yanqing, said she's confident in beating Chen and snatching the gold medal in 2008 Olympics.

"I've already broken her jerk record today and I will certainly break the other two records in the future," Qiu said.

The 24-year-old medalist won the clean and jerk gold with 141 kg in the Asian Weightlifting Championship here on Monday, one kilogram more than the former world record, set by Chen Yanqing in 2006 Doha Asian Games.

Qiu achieved it in her third attempt after clearing 125kg and 135kg. "I knew I could do it," she said.

Qiu had planned to break the world record of snatch, 111 kg, also held by Chen Yanqing, and set her goal at 112 kg in snatch. However, she only managed to lift 100 kg in her third attempt after failing twice.

"I thought the weight was easy for me and I didn't pay enough attention," she said. Chen Yanqing didn't take part in the championship.

Li Shunzhu, coach of China women's weightlifting team, said Chen has been training in a local team not with the national team recently.

"Qiu's performance today will be a good stimulation for Chen and other lifters," Li said. He didn't say whether Qiu would be chosen to compete in 2008.

"Qiu is just one of our trump cards. We have two to three top lifters in every class to ensure that we needn't to bet all on a single person," he said.

Facing challenge from foreign strong opponents and her teammates, Qiu still believed she could win a gold medal in Beijing Olympics.

"My biggest rival is myself," she said.

Women's 58kg class used to be dominated by Chinese veteran lifter Chen Yanqing, 28, as she had held all the three world records. She still holds the records of snatch and the total. Qiu Hongmei tried to break Chen's world record in jerk in last year's World Weightlifting Championship, but failed.
